Jim Patton was born in Oklahoma City and after graduation from high school there, he proudly served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Upon separation from the military, Jim started his career in orthopedic sales, where he worked in hospital Operating Rooms specializing in Total Joint Replacement, Internal Fixation, and Spinal Repair.
In 1996, Jim founded Joint Technology Inc. / Revert Systems, an orthopedic conservative care company. Revert Systems focuses on helping patients increase their activity level and decrease their pain level using non-narcotic, non-invasive devices.
He also founded Legacy Homes and Properties, LLC, in 1998 specializing in single family homes. Multi-family properties were added later and the business continues to flourish.
In the summer of 2013, Jim recruited Dr. John Barr sharing much in common, including their keen interest in a remedy for the dangers of what has become, the “Opiate Epidemic.” From his orthopedic conservative care companies, Jim understood the benefits of being able to protect the patient from opioid misuse or diversion risks. Since then, Jim and Dr. Barr have collaborated on ways to fight this ever-growing problem with a better dispensing method and PillSafe was born. Together, they have worked diligently to create the features and benefits needed to bring PillSafe to fruition including acquiring valuable patents and developing the Go-To-Market strategies.
Most recently, PillSafe has evolved to become the world’s first Wirelessly connected Smart pill bottle utilizing AI to augment coaching and mediation for controlled substances and adherence-critical medications. Jim has his sights set so that the 28 product features now being developed for PillSafe will revolutionize the ways many drugs are dispensed from the pharmacy to the patient for much better in-home regimens.

John Barr, MD practiced family medicine in North Carolina for over 30 years. He spearheaded his home county’s paramedic program, and served as EMS Medical Director starting with basic EMT through each step to EMT-P–writing all treatment protocols, teaching, and assisting local emergency calls in his area. He also co-founded the first Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course in his County, and taught ACLS for many years.
In addition to his private practice, he performed obstetrics for 8 years, and worked hundreds of hours in local Emergency Rooms. He also served as medical director of two large nursing homes, helping to start one of these facilities by writing new protocols which were approved by the State. He was selected by NC Government Officials to serve on several State and County government committees.
As an instrument rated pilot, he also served as an Aviation Medical Examiner performing flight exams on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class pilots. He also cofounded Third Creek Development Corporation, which built a small shopping center (including his office and pharmacy.)
As his practice became located in close proximity to the largest truck manufacturer in North America, he treated a large number of truck drivers with chronic back pain. Eager to alleviate the discomfort and suffering of his patients in the safest and most effective way possible, Dr. Barr was persuaded by early large, published studies which stated that the prescribing of opioids was effective and the risk of addiction was minimal. Dr. Barr was therefore at the forefront of early opioid prescribing but it was only later found that these studies were fallacious and Dr. Barr became the victim of a system that then penalized physicians for aggressive prescribing.
He next considered what could be done to help protect patients and fellow practitioners from what became the “Opioid Drug Epidemic.” As “Child Resistant (CR)” lids were a 50+ year-old innovation to save pediatric overdoses, he realized that there must be a better way to dispense controlled substances to lessen misuse and diversion. Thus, PillSafe, the idea for a better medication bottle was born.
In 2013, he joined Jim Patton, Founder of Joint Technology Inc. / Revert Systems, an orthopedic conservative care company focused on helping patients increase their activity level and decrease their pain level using non / narcotic, non / invasive devices. Jim saw the potential of PillSafe and blended 30+ years of successful marketing of conservative medical devices used for chronic pain, with Dr. Barr’s 30+ years of family medicine treating chronic pain, thereby creating a founding management team for bringing this innovation to market. Dr. Barr and Jim Patton have now spent much of their careers researching and developing the PillSafe concept, including filing patents, and what has now become over 28 product functions including AI generated coaching and mediation for adherent-critical medications.
It is Dr. Barr’s passion that the PillSafe innovation will protect the public from the Prescription Drug Epidemic by creating a paradigm shift in the way addictive medications are contained and protected from the pharmacy to the patient for in home use.
